Our latest TAFCA adventure took us to the historic town of St Andrews, where we faced off against their C team on Thursday night. The journey over was memorable in itself – driving through rain the likes of which I’ve genuinely never seen before. Biblical doesn’t quite do it justice.
Still feeling the sting of our SNCL outing last Sunday, we were conscious that a strong performance was needed – and I’m pleased to say, the team delivered. We came away with a 3-1 victory and a welcome boost to morale.
Board 1 – Lewis Matheson
I played the Vienna and was quite happy coming out of the opening. I gained a piece and opened up my opponent’s king, but my own king was left uncastled – which led to a tense and rather chaotic middlegame. In the end, I managed to steer things back under control and converted the advantage for the full point.
Board 2 – Robbie Williamson
Robbie was experimenting with a new opening and held a very level game for over 50 moves. Unfortunately, one small inaccuracy in the endgame tipped the balance. It was a long, hard-fought battle and a tough loss, but great experience nonetheless.
Board 3 – David Bridges
David played like a man possessed – or perhaps just a Grandmaster in disguise. He slowly squeezed his opponent by locking down the queenside and then launching a clinical kingside attack. It was strategic, composed, and brutal. His opponent could do little but resign after the assault landed.
Board 4 – Michael Clayton
Michael, our newest recruit, continues to impress. Still finding his feet in competitive play, he showed real grit and composure. In what looked like a drawn endgame, he kept probing and ultimately ground out the win. A huge confidence boost, and a well-deserved point!
All in all, a fantastic result – especially following our recent SNCL experience. We’re back on track and looking ahead to our next match against Castlehill D. Let’s hope the momentum stays with us!
