Stonehaven Chess Club rounds off a busy start to April with competitive spirit and shared silverware
On Sunday 31st March, we travelled to Dundee for our penultimate TAFCA league match of the season, taking on a strong Castlehill D side. It was a close contest throughout, and we came away with a 2–2 draw.
Lewis and Bruce both secured well-earned wins on boards 1 and 2, while Robbie and Tate were unfortunate to lose their games against tough opponents. While we had been hopeful of a win, the draw was a fair outcome — and one we were happy to accept after a good battle over the boards.
We now look ahead to our final league fixture against Perth C on Monday. It’s been a hugely enjoyable debut season in the TAFCA league, and we’re already committed to entering a team again next year.
Club Championship Concludes with Shared Victory
Just two days later, on Tuesday 2nd April, our inaugural club championship came to a thrilling conclusion. After five rounds of competitive play, Alan Cundill and Graham McKay emerged as joint champions, both finishing on 4/5.
Hot on their heels were Keith and Bob, sharing second place, with Robbie and Lewis in joint third.
The standout game of the final round came from Graham, who faced Bob in a match that would determine the championship’s outcome. Playing White, Graham opted for the Caro-Kann Fantasy Variation and executed a sharp and dynamic strategy to win the game. A draw would have seen Bob share the title with Alan, but Graham’s win meant he claimed a well-deserved share of first place instead.
Well played to all who took part — it was a brilliant event and a fitting way to close out the season.
