TAFCA Individual Championship: A Hard-Fought Tournament

The TAFCA Individual Championship has concluded, delivering an exciting event filled with tense battles, brilliant fights, and some painful blunders. Stonehaven Chess Club was well represented, with Keith, Robbie, and myself competing in a strong field of players from across the region.

Final Standings for Stonehaven Players:

  • Keith Emery: 3/5
  • Robbie Williamson: 2.5/5
  • Lewis Matheson: 2/5

The tournament attracted a diverse group of participants, with Shubham Lakudkar (2147, Perth) and Jan Alfred Klingelhoefer (1713, Dundee Victoria) leading the field, both finishing with 4.5 points. The competition was intense, and every round presented new challenges.

My Performance: Close but Costly

I finished on 2/5, a result that could have been better had I not made a crucial blunder in my final game. Playing as Black in a Caro-Kann, I was in a commanding position but faltered on move 29, turning a likely win into a disappointing loss. That said, round 4 provided a highlight as I managed to scrape a draw from a losing position, showcasing the fighting spirit needed in such a competitive event.

Robbie’s Grit and Determination

Robbie put in a solid performance, fighting hard throughout the tournament. He earned two well-deserved wins and a draw, demonstrating resilience and sharp play. His games were a testament to his growing strength, and he should be proud of his efforts.

Keith’s Strong Run

Keith led the way for Stonehaven with an impressive 3/5, picking up two wins and two draws. His solid and consistent play showed his experience and ability to hold his own in a challenging field. His performance ensured Stonehaven made its mark on the championship.

A Well-Run Event

A huge thank you goes to Ray Noble, who organised the tournament superbly. The event was professionally run, and everything from pairings to time controls was managed smoothly. His dedication to chess in the region is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to competing in the event again next year.

Looking Ahead

While we may not have come away with top prizes, the tournament provided invaluable experience, and we’ll be back stronger. The lessons learned will no doubt help us in future competitions, including our upcoming league matches.

Congratulations to all the participants, and well done to the winners of the TAFCA Individual Championship. We’ll be sure to return next year, ready to fight once more!
