About Us
Welcome to the Stonehaven Chess Club – a welcoming and vibrant hub for chess enthusiasts in Stonehaven and the surrounding areas. Relaunched in the wake of the COVID pandemic by Lewis Matheson, inspired by a chance meeting with one of the original members, the club’s mission is to build a thriving chess community where players of all ages and abilities can come together to enjoy, learn, and compete in the timeless game of chess.
Whether you’re a seasoned player or a complete beginner, you’ll find a supportive and friendly environment to develop your skills and share your passion for the game.
Our club actively competes in both the Scottish National Chess League (SNCL) and the North East Scotland Chess League, giving members the chance to represent Stonehaven in team competitions. We also run our own Club Championship, Allegro Championship, and Blitz Championship.
Thanks to recent lottery funding, we have been able to build this website, purchase new clocks and boards, design an outdoor poster, cover venue hire, and provide essential club stationery – all helping us grow and promote chess in Stonehaven.
While we don’t currently offer formal coaching, our members are always willing to share advice, analyse games together, and learn from one another.
Our ethos is built on inclusivity, learning, and community engagement. Whether you’re looking to play for fun, improve your skills, or compete at a high level, the Stonehaven Chess Club is the perfect place for you.
Come along and join us – let’s make your next move together.
North East Scotland Chess League
The North East Chess League was re-established after the COVID pandemic, bringing together clubs from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, and the surrounding area for competitive team-based play. Although currently small, with five teams, it provides valuable opportunities for local players to enjoy competitive chess in a friendly and supportive setting.
The Stonehaven Chess Club is proud to play an active role in this developing league, and we look forward to seeing it grow in the years ahead.
Stay updated on North East League results and fixtures through our Fixtures Page, or visit us on club night to get involved!
Scottish National Chess League (SNCL)
The Scottish National Chess League is the pinnacle of team chess in Scotland, bringing together clubs from across the country for a highly competitive and dynamic league. Featuring multiple divisions, the SNCL offers players of all skill levels the chance to compete on a national stage and test themselves against some of the best talent in Scottish Chess. The league takes place over several Sundays each season, fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
The Stonehaven Chess Club is proud to compete in the SNCL, showcasing our dedication and love for the game. If you're ready to take you chess to the next level, why not join our team and be part of the action?
